Vieira,Regine Helena Silva dos Fernandes; Sousa,Oscarina Viana de; Costa,Renata Albuquerque; Theophilo,Grace Nazareth Diogo; Macrae,Andrew; Fonteles Filho,Antonio Adauto; Rodrigues,Dália dos Prazeres.
The aims of this study were to count and identify sucrose positive and negative vibrios isolated from cultivated Crassostrea rhizophorae oysters during their growing cycle. Every month for 12 months, 10 to 18 oysters were collected for study. Collections occurred at the Center for Studies of Coastal Aquaculture (CSCA), which is associated with the Institute of Marine Science, Labomar, located in Euzebio, Ceará, Brazil. Approximately 150 oysters and their intervalvular liquor were studied. Vibrio Standard Plates Counts (SPC) from oyster meat and their intervalvular liquor varied from 25 to 59,000,000 CFU/g. For most of the 12 months of the oysters' life, it was possible to identify Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Vibrio carchariae was identified in four...

The use of API 20E for the identification of Vibrio anguillarum and V. ordalii OMA
Grisez, L.; Ceusters, R.; Ollevier, F.P..
Sixty-eight strains of Vibrio anguillarum, five of V. ordalii and the type strains of V. alginolyticus, V. carchariae, V. damsela and V. parahaemolyticus were compared using the API 20E gallery. Within the V. anguillarum strains, distinct groups could be separated mainly on the basis of their reaction on indole production and the fermentation of amygdalin and arabinose. Vibrio ordalii, the former V. anguillarum biotope 2, could easily be separated from V. anguillarum and from the other fish pathogenic Vibrio spp.

Vibrio carchariae, a pathogen of the abalone Haliotis tuberculata ArchiMer
Nicolas, Jean-louis; Basuyaux, Olivier; Mazurie, Joseph; Thebault, Anne.
Since 1997, mass mortality of the abalone Haliotis tuberculata L. has occurred in the natural environment along the French coast. The outbreak of disease started on the south coast of Brittany near Concarneau in 1997, then spread to the north of Brittany (in 1998) and the west coast of Normandy (Golfe de St. Malo in 1999). Between 60 and 80% of the abalone died. In 1999, mortality also affected a land-based abalone farm in Normandy during the summer. At this farm, a Vibrio sp. was isolated in abundance from abalone that had just died. The disease was experimentally reproduced by inoculation or by introducing the pathogen into the surrounding water. This vibrio, identified by genotypic and phenotypic characters, is related to V carchariae. It is similar to...
